When Should You Contact Your Provider?

Mild nausea, early fullness, constipation, or temporary changes in bowel habits can occur with GLP-1 medications, particularly when starting treatment or increasing the dose. But you should not assume every symptom is normal just because you take a GLP-1 medication.

Contact Your Provider If You Have:

  • Nausea that is persistent, worsening, or interfering with eating

  • Repeated vomiting

  • Diarrhea that is persistent or difficult to manage

  • Constipation that is significant, worsening, or not improving

  • Difficulty drinking enough fluids

  • Difficulty eating enough protein or maintaining adequate nutrition

  • Excessive appetite suppression or feeling like you can barely eat

  • Dizziness, weakness, or lightheadedness

  • Significantly decreased urination

  • New or persistent abdominal pain

  • Significant reflux or upper-GI symptoms

  • Side effects that repeatedly return after dose increases

  • Symptoms that interfere with work, exercise, sleep, or normal daily activities

If you are still having significant side effects when your next dose increase is due, contact your provider before increasing the dose.

Your treatment plan may need to be reassessed rather than simply continuing through the standard titration schedule.

When Should You Seek Urgent Medical Care?

Some symptoms require more immediate evaluation.

Seek prompt or emergency medical care for:

  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially if it radiates to the back

  • Severe right-upper abdominal pain, particularly with fever, vomiting, or jaundice

  • Repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down

  • Signs of significant dehydration, such as fainting, confusion, very little urine, or severe weakness

  • Vomiting blood or blood in the stool

  • Severe abdominal swelling or pain with inability to pass stool or gas

  • Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including facial or throat swelling or difficulty breathing

  • Any severe, rapidly worsening, or otherwise concerning symptoms

You Don't Have to "Push Through" Side Effects

GI symptoms are common with GLP-1 therapy, but common does not mean they should be ignored.

Sometimes the appropriate response is simply more time at the current dose. Other situations may require treatment of a specific side effect, changes in nutrition or hydration, medication review, dose adjustment, or evaluation for another medical problem.

The goal is not to tolerate the highest dose possible.

The goal is to find a treatment strategy that provides meaningful benefit while allowing you to eat adequately, stay hydrated, maintain strength and function, and feel well enough to live your life.
